Sharon Meieran is the only candidate for Multnomah County Chair who has presented a clear, credible plan to drive meaningful change.
As a former county commissioner and emergency room physician, she understands that lasting reform requires both urgency and effective leadership. Her plan includes appointing an Interim Stabilization Leader—a proven change-management expert—to implement rapid but disciplined improvements across critical county functions. Meieran has publicly advocated for structural reforms, greater accountability, and measurable results in county government.
The other declared candidates are current county commissioners who have had countless opportunities to address serious problems in Multnomah County Animal Services, yet no intervention has occurred.
At MCAS, the consequences of continued dysfunction are measured in animal suffering and loss of life. The status quo is unacceptable. Animals cannot afford years of more studies, committees, and promises. They need action now, and Sharon Meieran is the only candidate offering a concrete plan to deliver it.

As you know, the County is currently accepting applications for the MCAS Shelter Director position. I am writing to request your direct oversight of the selection process, and, if necessary, your active intervention to ensure its integrity, as it concludes on June 29.
The next MCAS Director must be a proven turn-around specialist with the skills and experience necessary to reduce animal suffering and restore public trust in the agency. The animals, employees, volunteers, and taxpayers of Multnomah County all deserve confidence that this critical leadership role is filled through a fair, transparent, and merit-based process.
